Profiles of Yarm’s tennis coaches, headed by Anne Clayton
In addition to the coaches mentioned below, some of our better and older Juniors qualify as official Junior Coaches, and others help out at the group coaching sessions as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
Many of these juniors also represent the Senior teams, showing our youngsters how they can progress in just a few short years.
Anne first represented Durham & Cleveland in 1976, and has continued to represent the county at all age levels to this day. In 2012 Anne celebrated 21 years as County Captain. Since 1978, except for 2 years in the 80s, Anne never missed a County Week either as player, player/captain or non-playing captain. After this length of time Anne decided it was time to step down from captaincy and her selfless service and dedication to the county was acknowledged by a special award at the County Awards Evening in Sept. 2012.
Anne has won many county singles and doubles titles over the years and was awarded County Colours in 1980. In 1996 she was elected a member of the County LTA Executive Committee and the next year made a Hon. Life Vice President for services to tennis.
In 2002 Yarm TC was delighted to appoint Anne as their first full time head coach and now boasts a full, exciting, year round programme of playing and coaching activities for
juniors and seniors alike. In 2006 Anne received the BTCA (British Tennis Coaches Association) National Coach of the year award, and has won a number of other local and national awards.
Anne is now Deputy President and LTA Councillor for Durham & Cleveland and in addition Captains the County over 35 team, Yarm Ladies 1st team and is Brown Owl to 2nd Hartburn Brownie Pack.
